24. The Morning After – Reverse Cowgirl Style (Vista part 3)
The morning seemed to arrive extra early. Sleeping on the settee to keep an eye on Vista didn’t help either. My body was stiff and sore and my head felt like it was going to explode. I found the aspirin through bloodshot, bleary eyes and stumbled around making coffee. I pulled some breakfast sausage from the freezer and fired up the stove.
I lit a cigarette and perched on the edge of the bed. Vista was still the most beautiful thing in my world and she was still breathing. As I took a drag on my smoke, she groaned and shifted position. I watched intently as her eyes very slowly fluttered open. They had lost their iridescense, now a bloodshot murky blue.
“Good morning, princess. Coffee will be ready shortly.” There was no acknowledgement. I took another drag of my cigarette and went to the galley to tend to the sausage and pour coffee. I wondered how the day would unfold as I handed her a mug. I got her some aspirin and a cup of water.
After she swallowed the aspirin, she sat up, pulling her knees up to her chest. She cradled her coffee mug in both hands and just stared at it. I returned to the galley to pull together eggs and hash brown potatoes to go with the sausage. I kept glancing her way, searching for any clue as to her condition. She just kept staring at her coffee mug.
Hoping to elicit some response, I said “Boy, last night was sure fun, huh?” No response. Just her blank stare towards her mug. Guessing that she was either just not a morning person or she was still processing the events of last night, I busied myself cooking.
As I plated the food I gave it one more valient attempt. “Breakfast is ready. You hungry?” Dead silence. I set her plate down on the bed next to her. One last try. “You should eat before it gets cold. Aren’t you hungry?” Silence.
Finally, she turned to look at me. Her large eyes were filled with tears. The drops began running down her cheek. I quickly handed her a tissue but she just looked at me, tears rolling down her cheeks. She made no effort to wipe them away. She stared at me thusly, then turned back to examining her coffee mug. She started sniffling as the tears kept dripping from her eyes.
I put my plate aside and grabbed the box of tissues. I moved over to the bed and wrapped my arms around her. She collapsed onto my chest, openly crying now, sobbing, sniffling as the tears kept coming.
I had absolutely no clue, none whatsoever. I didn’t know why she was crying. I didn’t know what I should do. I was at a total loss. All I could do was hold her as she bawled her head off.
Finally, her sobbing lessened a little. I pulled out a handful of tissues and gave them to her. She buried her face in them and immediately started crying again. She was crying so hard that her whole torso heaved as she tried to get her breathing under control.
Soon it was over and she wiped her eyes and blew her nose. She still had the heaves as one does after crying so hard. Still having zero clues, I opted for silence. I just held her tight and waited.
Silence ensued until she made it evident that she needed to get up. I released her, returning to the settee, as she went to the head.
