49. Porta-Potty Sex

On my way up the east coast of Florida, I had anchored in bights and bayous and I had been at a dock in a marina. My next stop found me in a large, protected harbor. It was filled with 250 mooring balls and large open areas for anchoring.

No wet storage was allowed so there was someone on every boat. There were close to 200 boats in the harbor. All the services (showers, laundry, captain’s lounge, etc.) were onshore and you had to drive there. In your dinghy or kayak. The marina had an outdoor social area complete with Tiki Hut, porta-potty, BBQ grills, a fire pit and a waterfront view of the boats in the harbor. The showers, laundry and trash were at the far end of the property.

The Tiki Hut was the place. With so many boaters all in the same place at the same time, there was something going on there nearly every nite at cocktail hour. Sometimes just a few boaters, playing bean bag toss or cards; the refreshment table always well stocked. Other times it would be 30-40 boaters overflowing to the fire pit area. Two grills going, a separate table for deserts, and so many Yeti coolers they were a trip hazard. You never knew what you were going to find at the Tiki Hut.

I went to shore to shower and fill my Jerry cans with water. When I emerged with a clean and refreshed body and soul, I heard a commotion at the Tiki Hut. Walking the distance, I saw 12-15 people gathered. Turns out it was Celeste’s birthday. I joined the gathering and grabbed a beer from a nearby cooler.

Off to one side was a group of 4 people, 2 middle aged couples. I introduced myself and we went around with names. As a boater, when introducing yourself to other boaters, you typically give your name and your boat name. “Hi. We’re Daron and JoJo on Homewrecker.” Or “Connie and Robert on Why Knot.” Mine is “Sailor on Blow Me.” I got a laugh when I explained my rationale for the name. “Well, I’m single and it is, after all, a sail boat …
