Out for supper
It was around 25 below zero outside, sunny, but decided to go get a sub sandwich for supper. It took a few minutes for the car to warm up but managed to get to the Sub Shop before they closed due to the weather.
As I entered I noticed a young man (I’m 65) sort of shivering at the single table , the owner said he was closing after my order due to the lack of customers because of the weather. The young man (late teens 18/19) got up to leave, I asked him if he needed a ride somewhere. He looked up and said that would be awesome.
While we waited for my order he explained he lived in the next town over (15 miles) and had visited a friend but that the next bus wasn’t for another 2 hours but didn’t want to bother me with his problems.
I told him I had lots of time, was only going to watch the football game later anyway so it was no bother, I had lots of time. Oh he replied you have cable, that’s awesome, wished he did. He explained they lived on a farm off grid . He seem very quiet then looked up smiling stating that was what he had gone to his friends place for but that they had to go their grandparents unexpectedly.
I thought to my self, this could nice to have a buddy to watch the game with for a change(live alone). I asked him if he wanted to join me to watch the game and could give him a ride home after the game, told him it would be nice to have some company for a change. He thought about it for a few minutes and looked me in the eyes and smiled saying yeah that would be nice. Needless to say I was surprised but very pleased with his reply.
I told him to get himself a sub for the game (on me) and we chatted as we waited, found out he was a bit of a loner and had very few friends except for an older neighbor he would visit close to their farm. He enjoyed chatting with him and said he always felt warm inside after.
I paid for the subs and as we were driving to my place I asked what he meant by that he had a warm feeling when he left his neighbor’s .
