It was an ordinary Saturday afternoon. There was nothing to do that weekend, just a lazy day at home. An evil, red baker which used to contain leftover casserole stared at me from across the room. Returning that baker was the only thing I had to do that weekend. It belonged to my wife’s identical twin sister, Julie. She had visited us the week prior for a dinner party and had brought over a casserole. I don’t remember what type it was, I never touched it. My wife, Jessica, finished the leftover casserole yesterday and tasked me with returning the washed container today. It had been a long week at the Hospital I work at. My boss was out all week because his wife just had a baby. That meant I had to take care of a lot of his responsibilities. I was overworked and prepared to lay around all weekend.
“You didn’t leave yet?” Jessica scoffed. She pointed to the baker sitting on the island counter. It was her sister’s property I didn’t know why I had to return it but every decent man knows not to say such things aloud to his wife.
“Alright, alright, I’ll get going,” I huffed. In an over exaggerated manner, I got up from the couch. The stupid container seemingly smiled at me. It knew it was ruining my afternoon plans. It wasn’t alive or sentient, but it knew.
The drive to Julie’s house was not long. She lived about thirty minutes away from us. The twins didn’t move far from their parents as both of our households are only an hour from their childhood home where their parents still live. This was one of many ways in which Julie and Jessica were similar. Obviously, as identical twins they had the exact same appearance. They thought similarly, both majored in biology, got jobs in labs and share a variety of the same hobbies, music taste and show preferences. It’s odd when they’re together they almost speak in their own language. Jessica could say one word and somehow an entire sentence of information is passed to Julie. I’ll never understand it.
Finally, I arrived at the doorstep of my wife’s doppelgänger sister. Julie got divorced two years back, no kids, but a heartbreaking split nonetheless. She ended up with a lot of money though. Jessica nags me constantly about the house Julie can afford on her own, the self-driving Tesla she bought, the kitchen she remodeled. Julie has it all and all to herself.
The doorbell rung in harmony with the wind chimes. When Julie opened the door I was reminded of how different she was from my wife. Identical twins meant they both look the same but someone like me could tell the difference. It’s actually easy if you don’t look at her face. They both have the same light brown hair, light brown eyes, and flawless white skin. The best way to tell them apart was their body. Julie is a bit thicker than Jessica, though not by much. Jessica is a B cup and Julie is almost a C so they’re still pretty close. Of course I know these facts because Jessica tells me. I’m told they’re only ten to fifteen pounds away from being the same weight. This makes it barely noticeable to most, or to those who don’t know where to look. The face will never help you, the ass, thighs, belly, breasts, those will tell you everything. Last week, at the dinner party, I put this to the test. I’d ignore their faces and look at the features I listed, I’d ask myself which looked rounder, or fuller, and the one that was, was always Julie.
“Uh, hey,” Julie greeted nervously. She held the door open with one hand, arm fully extended. Her clothes were usually similar to Jessica’s, same taste and all, but not today. Instead of a sundress, Julie had on a black crop top and black leggings. This really showed off the difference in the two woman’s curves. Unfortunately, she looked too similar to my wife for my dick to know the difference. I could feel myself blush at the sight of Julie’s slightly more voluptuous figure.
“Hi, just wanted to return your casserole dish thing,” I announced. Julie didn’t react. My words hung in the air, waiting to be acknowledged. It was awkward enough to make my friendly smile fade. “Are you ok?”
Julie shook her head like an etch-a-sketch clearing before restarting. “I’m sorry, please come inside,” Julie replied.
“Oh no, I’m just here to return your-“
Julie cut me off. “No, I need to talk to you Rob,” she insisted. That was odd. Julie rarely talked to me one on one. Something was wrong. Then again I couldn’t tell. If something was wrong Julie would talk to Jessica because of their super twin bond. I felt an odd rush of uneasiness travel down my spine and settle in my stomach.
The front door clicked shut behind me. “I have to tell you something that’s gonna be difficult for you to hear,” Julie stated plainly. My face twisted in confusion. She took the baker from my hands and brought it into the kitchen. I followed her. Julie set the baker down in a cabinet inside her island counter.
“What is it?” I asked. Part of me just wanted to break the awkward silence, the odd tension that filled the room.
Julie fixed her eyes on mine. They didn’t move. Her lips started to move though no words came out. Eventually, she took a deep breath and looked down. “Rob, Jessica has been cheating on you.”
Her words were so foreign they didn’t even register. My wife was cheating on me? That didn’t make sense, there was no way. It was such a bizarre, unfamiliar sentence, it was almost another language. I remained silent. Instead of asking questions, my mind completely shut down. No thoughts, opinions, speech, just a blank void.
Julie decided to continue. “I know it’s hard to hear and it’s ok if you’re mad at me, I just thought you should know.”
My brain slowly came back to life like a zombie.
