Executed Couple

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the deserted road. Li gripped the steering wheel of his beat-up sedan, his eyes fixed on the cracked asphalt ahead. He was alone, as he often was, driving through the remote countryside in search of… what, exactly? He wasn’t sure. A distraction, perhaps. A way to escape the monotony of his ordinary life.

As he rounded a bend, something caught his eye. Two dark shapes lay motionless on the side of the road. Li slowed his car to a stop and climbed out, his heart pounding in his chest. As he approached, the shapes resolved into the unmistakable forms of a man and a woman, sprawled in on the ground side by side.

Li was cautious as he took in the scene. The man’s face was a mask of blood and shattered bone, his eyes staring sightlessly at the sky. The woman lay on her back, her limbs splayed at unnatural angles. As he knelt beside her, Li noticed the bullet hole in her forehead. She had been shot at close range, her face frozen in a mask of terror. Her clothes were torn and bloodstained, her body marred with bruises and cuts. “Executed and dumped, probably drug related,” Li thought to himself. Li felt a strange sensation in his groins looking at this woman.

He looked around, but there was no one in sight. The road was deserted, the fields empty and still.
