College Life

My first year of college, I went away. About an hour and a half drive from home. Far enough that my parents wouldn’t come bug me all the time but close enough that I could go home whenever I wanted to. I was taking the basic classes like every freshman does. I only knew one person before I got to college. Rob was my best friend in high school and we did almost everything together. We both went to the same college for teaching. We thought it would be an easy thing to get into and fun to mess with the kids we would teach. We knew how much we liked our cool teachers and we thought that we should try to be like them when we got jobs. Rob and I were room mates. We lived in a co-ed dorm, thinking that would give us a good opportunity to meet a lot of people. Rob and I had most of the same classes so we would walk across campus together. About two weeks into class we noticed two girls that were in the same forth hour class as us. They would usually get to class before us. We would see them walking to class together often. One day, as we were walking into the classroom, one of the girls was standing outside the room and introduced herself to us.

“Hi, I’m Kristen. I’ve seen you two around a lot and thought I would say hi. I don’t know a lot of people up here besides Jenny so I thought I would try to get to know you guys since we have a few classes together.” Kristen was about 5’ 5” tall, maybe 115 pounds with blonde hair and deep brown eyes.

“Hi,” I said. “I’m Brian, nice to meet you. This is Rob. What are you studying?”

“I want to be a teacher. I liked some of my teachers in high school and I thought I could do that. My friend Jenny wants to be a nurse.” She turned into the room, “Jenny, come here. I want you to meet someone.”

Jenny got up out of her seat and walked out to the hallway. “Hi, I’m Jenny. Nice to meet you.”

“This is Rob and this is Brian. They’re going to be teachers as well.”

“Hi Jenny,” I said. “Kristen says you want to be a nurse? That’s cool. That is a great profession.” Jenny was about 5’ 7” tall and around the same size as Kristen. She had dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. From where I stood, both girls were in good shape.

“Where are you from? We both live about an hour and a half south of here.”

“We’re from New York . Queens to be specific. We thought we would try to go out of state for college. We grew up doing everything together. We found an out of state college that offered nursing and teaching so we could go to college together too.”

“That’s funny. Rob and I grew up together too. We’ve known each other since elementary school. We played soccer together when we were little and football in high school. He was the quarterback and I was his best receiver.”

Rob chimed in, “Well, I wouldn’t say the best, but a good one.” You could tell he was joking.

I punched him in the shoulder. “If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have made varsity all four years.”

“Yeah, that’s true. We had the perfect secret weapon. That ‘special’ play that even the rest of the offense didn’t know we ran,” Rob said.

I heard the teacher begin to take roll, “I think class is starting. Can we pick this up later?”

Jenny said, “Yeah, let’s do that.” And we all walked into class. Rob and I sat near the two girls, but far enough away that they couldn’t hear us talking about them.

I looked at Rob, “Damn boy! They’re pretty cute huh?”

“Yeah they are,” Rob whispered back. “I’m gonna call dibs on Kristen. You know how much I love brunettes. You can settle for Jenny.”

“Yeah right. Settle?” I asked. “I have this thing for nurses. You know that.”

“Excuse me, fellas? Do you mind if I teach the class?” the teacher asked looking right at us.

“Sorry sir.” I apologized.

After class got out, Kristen and Jenny waited for us in the hallway. “What dorm do you guys live in?” Jenny asked.

“We live in Kittredge on the north end of campus,” I said. “You guys?”

Jenny replied, “We live in Lewis. I think its right next door to Kittredge isn’t it?”

“Yeah, it is,” Rob said. “Hey, since none of us really know many people here, do you two wanna go out tonight? I mean, there’s not a whole lot to do here, but we can find something.”

Kristen looked at Jenny with a puzzled look on her face, “Yeah, sure. That’s fine. What time?”

“I don’t know.” Rob looked at me and said, “How about 5 or so. We can go get some dinner then find something else to do after that.”

“Yeah, that sounds good. Pick us up at five?”

“We’ll be there. See ya then.” They walked away talking to each other.

I looked at Rob and smiled. “Nice buddy! This could be a good thing.”

The afternoon went by; Rob and I played some football with some of the guys from our dorm. It was 4 o’clock. “Rob, we gotta go bro. It’s already 4.” With that, Rob and I walked to the dorm.

It was 4:45 when Rob and I were ready. I got my keys and wallet and we walked outside. We went over to Lewis hall where the girls lived. I was wearing a polo and khaki shorts. “I hope they’re not too dressed up Brian. I mean, I want them to look nice, but I hope they’re not over dressed.”

Kristen and Jenny were sitting in the lobby area of their dorm when Rob and I walked in. Kristen was wearing a tight white t-shirt and even tighter blue jeans.
